Thiago de Freitas

Born in Santo André, Brazil, Thiago de Freitas began his piano studies at the age of 16 with Luciana Tolentino, at the Cacilda Becker Municipal Conservatory, in Pirassununga. He has a Master’s Degree in Arts and Bachlor’s Degree in Piano from the Music Department of the University of São Paulo, having studied with Fernando Corvisier, Ricardo Kubala, Eliane Tokeshi, Fátima Monteiro, Ivan Vilela, and Julian Tryczynski.

Mr. Freitas is an active collaborative pianist, having played in workshops and Master Classes offered by musicians such as Abel Rocha, Edmar Ferreti, Marcelo Guerchfeld, Ricardo Ballestero, Tânia Guarnieri (Brazil); Antonio Meneses, Matias de Oliveira Pinto, Marcio Carneiro (Brazil-Germany); Mika Rännäli (Finland); Tobias Hiler, Goetz Hartmann (Germany); Antonio Carrilho (Portugal), Pablo de León (Portugal- Brazil); Liliana Bizineche (Romania- Portugal); and Irina Ratcheva (Russia- Brazil).

He has performed chamber music with renowned musicians, such as Adriana Kayama, Alex Klein, Angelo Fernandes, Brygida Bziukiewicz (Poland), Cristiane da Costa, Flávio Carvalho, Jean William (Brazil-Italy), Jeanyi Kim-Mandl (USA), Jorge Luis Zamora (Cuba), Kathryn Hartgrove (USA), Kayami Satomi, Poliana Alves, Roberto Sion, Rogério Wolf, Snizhana Drahan (Ukraine) and Victor Diniz (Brazil-Germany), in cities such as Buenos Aires, Gualeguay (Argentina), Cascais, Évora (Portugal), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Campos do Jordão, Palmas, Londrina, Rio de Janeiro, Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora, Ouro Branco, Uberlândia (Brazil).

In 2009, Mr. Freitas received second place in the Luis Thomasceck National Piano Competition in Professional Piano Solo Category, and in 2010, in the same competition, he received second place in the Chamber Music Category, playing with the violinist Leonidas Caceres (Colombia), as well as Honorable Mention in the interpretation of music from the Classical Period. He was the pianist in orchestras conducted by Kayami Satomi, Catherine Maguire (England), and Dietmar Wiedmann (Germany).

He was the pianist for the Brazilian Premiere of Chiquinha Gonzaga’s three act opera A bota do Diabo at the VI Pirenópolis Historical Musicology Meeting (2014), collaborative pianist for the production of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, conducted by Roberto Minczuk (2015). Mr. Freitas was also the pianist in the Portuguese language premiere of the Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Uberlândia Municipal Theater (2016) as well as the production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica (2018) and the pianist for the I Edmar Ferretti Vocal Competition (2019). In 2016, together with the soprano Carol Moraes, he presented the recital “Estreias” (Premieres) in Uberlândia, which included world and national premieres of works by Brazilian composers such as, Paulo Rowlands, Jorge Antunes, Silvia Berg, Elvio Filho, and Bruno Moreira. In the same year, this same duo presented the project Brasilidades, which included a wide variety of Brazilian music, with three programs: Villa-Lobos’ works, Brazilian opera and Brazilian music for piano solo. In 2018, together with the tenor Flávio Carvalho, Mr. Freitas recorded the complete vocal works by Dinorá de Carvalho.

Mr. Freitas was the musical director and pianist in FIO ITALIA’s 2022 production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, in Urbania (Italy).

For two years, Mr. Freitas was the musical director and collaborative pianist of the Coral Division of the Ribeirão Preto Symphony Orchestra. Currently, is the collaborative pianist for the Music Department at the Arts Institute at the Federal University of Uberlândia.
